The Department of Crop and Soil Sciences encompasses diverse disciplines in research extension and teaching. The department’s mission is to develop future leaders in crop, soil, and environmental sciences, improve crop plants and products, devise effective and sustainable crop production systems, devise effective and sustainable soil management techniques in both agriculture and urban settings; and disseminate crop, soil, and environmental science knowledge for the benefit of users and producers of food, feed turf, biofuels and fiber in North Carolina, the nation and the world.

Essential Job Duties
The primary purpose of the Grant Specialist is to provide comprehensive operational support for the $51.5+ million Crop and Soil Sciences grant portfolio to include an annual average of awards of $13.1 million. This position supports faculty members, their employees, sponsors, and collaborators with grant-funded projects.

Primary responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
  • Review and guide principal investigators and their collaborators in reference to personnel salaries, fiscal matters, and all business operational aspects of their grants;
  • Ensure compliance with Cost Accounting Standards and sponsor terms and conditions;
  • Work closely with the college business office and college contracts and grants office to properly comply with all grant regulations;
  • Provide training to all research team members on internal operational processes and paperwork making sure to give assistance to resolve any issues;
  • Assist with pre-award grant budget development and serve as a liaison with the college pre-award team;
  • Post-award analysis of budgets including monitoring and reviewing expenditures for accuracy and compliance;
  • Provide operational support to principal investigators and their collaborators;
  • Review and approve grant expenses to include travel, Marketplace, PCards, fleet cards, journal vouchers, interdepartmental transactions, requisition/purchase orders, personal reimbursements, and invoices;
  • Calculate needed actions including SDCs (salary distribution changes);
  • Submit timely operational requests into the college case management system, ServiceNow, to include journal vouchers and salary distribution changes;
  • Assist principal investigator with any paperwork associated with post-award grant management;
  • Keep up to date on changes to interpret and effectively disseminate information to the grant principal investigators and their collaborators;
  • Sign up for and attend training when applicable to the position;
  • Attend internal/external meetings to maintain professional relationships and network with peers;
  • Discuss grant needs and concerns with appropriate individuals including the principal investigator, Department Head, and the college business office grant team;
  • Facilitate communication between the principal investigator and the pre and post-award units at the college business office and assist when needed.

Qualifications

Minimum Experience/Education
Bachelor’s degree and one year of experience related to the area of assignment; or equivalent combination of training and experience.

All degrees must be received from appropriately accredited institutions.

Other Required Qualifications
  • Prior knowledge of post-award grant administration and budget practices;
  • Must be capable of working independently as well as part of a team;
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills;
  • Ability to work effectively with diverse groups;
  • Microsoft and Google suites.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in Project/Business Management or Accounting/Finance and two (2) years experience, or an equivalent combination of training and experience;
  • Demonstrated success and familiarity with grant-funded projects and reporting;
  • Excellent organizational, interpersonal, decision-making, computer, and data management skills;
  • Experience with NCSU operational systems including PeopleSoft;
  • Background in working with agricultural projects;
  • Knowledge of and experience with pre-award grant processes.
