Duties:

  • Subject matter expert and technical advisor across the broad spectrum of technologies involved in nuclear weapon delivery systems. May serve as organizational representative at the DOD and national level.
  • Coordinates the planning and execution of SBIR programs across AFNWC; champions Air Force Global Strike Command operational requirements
  • Leads interaction and collaboration in multiple forums across the Air Force, DOD, and the interagency to leverage R&D capabilities for Nuclear Deterrence Operations needs.
  • Assist in management of the Chief Scientist's Office; act as Chief Scientist in the Chief Scientist's absence.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
  • Knowledge of professional physical science principles, practices, techniques, and procedures, and the ability to apply this knowledge to addressing challenges in technology development for nuclear weapons applications.
  • Organizational leadership skills and ability to oversee planning, execution, and reporting for research and development investments.
  • Skill in holding technical meetings, reviews, symposiums, interacting with peers within the scientific community.
  • Ability to develop, build, and utilize appropriate scientific techniques to resolve problems and identify alternative solutions.
  • Ability to plan, organize, and direct the functions and mentor, motivate, and appraise the staff of an organization.
  • Knowledge of safety, security, personnel management, and EEO regulations, practices, and procedures.
  • Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.
  • Candidates should have a strong technical background in the physical sciences and engineering, as well as experience with Air Force/Department of Defense research and development.
  • Candidates should have experience with the nuclear weapons enterprise and be familiar with Air Force/DOD organizational processes.
  • Candidates should have demonstrated skills in building and leading teams across diverse organizations.

  • Position requires to obtain and maintain a Top Secret - SCI security clearance.
  • This is a Critical Acquisition Position (CAP). Unless specifically waived by the appropriate component official, i.e., the Director of Acquisition Career Management for the component, the Service Acquisition Executive, or the Service Secretary.

Degree in physical science, engineering, or mathematics that included 24 semester hours in physical science and/or related engineering science such as mechanics, dynamics, properties of materials, and electronics is required. A master's or PhD degree in a physical science or related engineering field desired.
